Princess Cruises Posts Daily Video of Grand Princess Drydock

So,  Princess's Grand Princess, which was briefly the largest cruise ship in the world when she launched in 1998, is up on blocks right now at the Grand Bahama Shipyard in Freeport, Bahamas, undergoing a major refurbishment and even a bit of cosmetic surgery. She'll be in there a while, too — until May 4, to be exact — so Princess has launched a daily video-and-photo journal so interested parties can follow the refurbishment step by step, if they like.

Hosted by Grand Princess's cruise director, Martyn Moss, the videos and photos are available here.

The most interesting/sad/weird thing that will be happening to the ship over the next several weeks is the removal of her distinctive Skywalkers Nightclub, which until now has sat 150 feet above the ship’s stern on huge structural supports, like a high-tech treehouse (or, as someone observed a long time ago, like the handle of a shopping cart — take your pick). The nightclub is being sacrificed to a worthwhile god, namely better operational performance and greater fuel efficiency.

Other changes in the offing are:

  • A transformation of the ship's atrium to align with the "Piazza" atrium concept that's popular on the newer Princess ships, featuring an International Cafe and Vines Wine Bar
  • A new space, Leaves Tea Lounge and Library, with shelves of books for passengers to browse while they sip personalized tea blends
  • A new nightclub, The One5, which will be installed on deck 15
  • A new pizzeria called Alfredo's, with an open kitchen
  • A new Crown Grill steakhouse and seafood restaurant
  • A new Crooner's Martini Lounge
  • Seven new suites
  • A remodeling of the casino, boutiques, and art gallery
  • Enhancements to the Horizon Court, Lotus Spa, and wedding chapel
The new Grand Princess will make her re-debut on May 5 in Ft. Lauderdale, from which she'll depart on a transatlantic crossing to Southampton, UK, her home port for the summer and fall seasons.
